I made a pumpkin pie for my course's dancer indoor picnic on Tuesday. I can't say it was the best pumpkin pie I've ever tasted, but, for a beginner, I think I did pretty well. It was fun for my dance friends to get to try pumpkin pie for the first time too.
That night, my friend Mirna and I went to London to see Matthew Bourne's The Nutcracker. Before the show, we stopped by Trafalgar's Square to see the big, big Christmas tree. There were carolers there when we went which was an added bonus. Right next to the tree, they have a countdown to the 2012 olympics in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. London is definitely hyped for this summer. The Nutcracker was good. It wasn't a typical version; it was Matthew Bourne's comedic version with a different twist on the story. The dancers were phenomenal, and there was some great choreography as well. However, I'm still biased toward the classic version.
Wednesday, I had my last small group meeting. We had Christmas-y treats and watched a Christmas movie that was set in Coventry! I went and bought it the next day; I couldn't resist. Afterward, I had to say goodbye to two of my closest friends from here. It hadn't really hit me that I'm leaving until that moment, and that made for a tough goodbye. Needless to say, that was not my favorite part of my term here. As luck would have it, one of those friends ended up going to the Christian Union meeting that I went to the next night, so that big, final farewell wasn't quite as final as we'd thought!
Before Christian Union on Thursday, I had a viva as my final exam. Basically, I had a one-on-one conference with the professor where I had to talk for 15 minutes. (More than that went into it... guidlines, a list of things we had to address, yada yada. I won't bore you.) I think it went well; I'll find out for sure when they send me my feedback. The Christian Union meeting was another Christmas themed event, so, naturally, I had more sweets. We played a heated game of pictionary, and I tried to make at least one round of talking to all my friends there.
Today has been a pretty relaxed day. I went for coffee with a friend in the morning, and, then, my floormates and I had McDonald's for lunch so that I could test whether British McFlurry's are superior to American McFlurry's. In case you were wondering, they're about the same. They haven't solved the "none of the chocolate reaches the bottom half of the cup" problem either. Other than those two excursions, my activity for the day has been packing. I haven't quite found a place for everything yet, but I do know that I will be wearing many, many layers of clothing.
It's been one heck of a ride these last few months, and, because being an ocean away from everyone I know in the world for 3 months entitles me to about 5 seconds of cheesiness, I feel no shame in saying... every day is an adventure no matter where you are, and, even though I'm going to miss my UK adventure terribly, I'll be just as grateful to be adventuring in the States again. ...aaaaaaaaaaaaand time's up!
See you in 27 hours, America!
Laura
